Responsibility & Accountability |
We aim to challenge businesses and other organisations to take
responsibility for their impact on people and the planet, and to change
the ways they operate to make their impact positive.
There
is immense potential for change in economic and legal frameworks to
favour business activity that promotes human and environmental
wellbeing. We are actively working to help bring about such change.
We
recognise that many people working within businesses share these
objectives. We work with individuals, businesses and other
organisations committed to making business activity sustainable and
just – while remaining free to challenge those that hold back change.
Environmental & social impact
Our
current focus is on purchasing by public authorities in Scotland: we
want to see all public money spent in Scotland take account of local
and global environmental and social impacts – and hence encourage companies
wishing to supply the public sector to raise their standards.
Current and recent work includes:
- Consultancy
for the Scottish Parliament to help develop and implement
policies and procedures for socially and environmentally responsible
purchasing.
- CHE is a founder of Corporate
Responsibility Coalition Scotland (CORES), a group of organisations
working to ensure that companies and public authorities meet their
environmental and humanitarian responsibilities.
- We
are developing a project with Empower to work on corporate social
responsibility (CSR) with black and ethnic minority businesses.
Our current objectives are to:
- Undertake research into the practical and political opportunities and barriers to responsible public procurement
- Help develop and implement strategies to change the rules for public procurement & corporate accountability
- Undertake consultancy and training for organisations seeking to address environmental sustainability and social justice.
