On Monday 28th January 2008,
students from the Centre for Human Ecology put their valued CHE education
and knowledge into practice and set forth to raise ecological and political
consciousness at the Strathclyde Students’ Union resource council.
To start the process to turn Strathclyde
University into an environmental haven and hotbed of radicalism, four motions were passed to massively improve
Strathclyde’s environmental and ethical performance. The union is
now working to implement the motions and are reporting back to the students
by the end of the spring term. The motions mandate the union to:
- Offer and advertise varied
vegetarian and vegan alternatives in all of its food and retail outlets.
- Address food supply in order
to accommodate for an active and timetabled shift towards local and
organic produce.
- Carry out a comprehensive,
professional environmental audit of all union buildings and related
activities and set emission reduction targets which aim to match or
surpass national targets set by the Scottish government.
- To establish an annual ‘ethical
careers’ fair, for the purposes of promoting, advertising and raising
awareness of ethical career possibilities to students.
Great debate was had and many individuals
and organisations are getting involved in the Strathclyde green revolution,
but the CHE students feel this is just the start! Keep your ears to
the ground for more environmental and ethical action, from the CHE adventurists! The actions were part of Ecodemia;
a growing network aiming to embed environmental values in education
today. Ecodemia are students, staff and faculty groups taking
frontline action to reduce the education sector’s carbon
footprint and working to integrate ecological literacy into the curriculum. |
