Head, hand, heart – and purse?
It's impossible to place a monetary value on an MSc in Human Ecology –
but unfortunately, university fees must be paid. For some potential
students, the burden of fees would be too much to bear, effectively
excluding them from the transformative experience of the MSc. We are
now establishing a bursary fund and reaching out to the community for support, to assist students who would face
severe financial hardship by pursuing the MSc.
In addition to benefiting individual students, we believe that widening
access to the MSc will help cultivate even greater diversity within the
learning community and within the wider CHE network, enhancing the
experience of everyone involved. Over time, a relatively small
amount of money could have enormous impact, as the students who have
received bursaries apply the lessons from the CHE to their own lives
and communities. In the past, students from Latin America and
Africa have benefited from bursaries from the Konrad Zweig Trust, but this is the first time
the CHE has embarked on developing a specific bursary fund for its MSc.
This fund is a small, tangible way to put human ecology principles into
practice – allowing less-privileged voices to be heard, empowering
engagement, considering big-picture impacts, and placing resources
where they will be most beneficial.
