Eco-Renovation Network Launched

A CHE student from Glasgow is at the heart of a project aimed at promoting sustainability in the home. Robert Swinfen, a second year part-time student on the human ecology MSc, is also a founder of the Eco-Renovation Network which is launching this month with three events in Glasgow.

The network kicked off with former Scottish Executive minister Sarah Boyack chairing a panel session on "how your home can make energy" in ‘The Lighthouse’ on Mitchell Lane in Glasgow on 1st November.

Speakers Colin Porteous of the Scottish Solar Energy Group, Gordon Proven of Proven Engineering, Neil Philips of the Scottish Communities and Householder Renewables Initiative and Jason Ormiston of the Scottish Renewables Forum discussed ‘Powering your Home: the present and future of micro-generation’.

With a mission statement of “Connecting people to make our homes more sustainable”, the network’s next event comes tonight (Wednesday15th) and will give folk the chance to connect with Averil Stedeford. Her eco-renovation of her semi-detached house in Oxford won this year’s Observer Ethical Award.

At 7.30pm tonight in Adelaide's on Bath Street she will talk about the highs and lows of the project and offer inspiration and practical suggestions of how others can do the same kind of work.

Exactly two weeks later, at the same time and place, there is an opportunity to meet more people with experience of eco-build and renovation, to hear their experiences and ask them questions. Andy Swales, a Borders based eco-house builder and Paul Tuohy of the Energy Systems Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde will be speaking.

The session, chaired by Raymond Young of the Scottish Executive’s Architecture and Design Commission, will be followed by refreshments and an informal chance to discuss and input to the Eco-Renovation Network.
