I’m very happy to share the news that I’m starting a biweekly column on the Scotsman’s education page, writes CHE graduate Myshele Goldberg.
From 13th September, I’ll be reflecting on life as a PhD student and examining issues facing higher education. This wide remit will give me plenty of space to explore a broad range of topics, so I’m looking forward to quietly slipping some radical ideas in! It’s also a chance to stretch my writing muscles, looking at serious issues with an informal, ‘blog-style’ tone.
This fortunate turn of events came as a result of a letter to the editor I wrote back in June, cautioning against the introduction of tuition fees at Scottish universities. I was later asked to expand the letter in an opinion piece, which was published in July. To follow up, the education editor asked if I had any ideas for future articles, and I directed him to my website, where there are several education-themed pieces in their early stages. Originally he asked me to develop a few into one-off articles, but later offered me a regular column instead - I guess four years of updates have finally paid off!
I’m very excited about this opportunity to reach a wide audience and build my skills and reputation as a writer. It will be a challenge to find a balanced approach, but I think I’m up for it - my experience at CHE has given me a lot of practice with balancing acts!
Myshele will shortly be starting her PhD in the Department of Geography and Sociology at the University of Strathclyde.
