EMPOWER
Written by Centre for Human Ecology

EMPOWER Scotland is a partnership of five organisations working to fight racism and xenophobia in the workplace. Partly financed by the European Commission's EQUAL Community Initiative, EMPOWER is delivering a number of innovative projects across Scotland.

The members of EMPOWER are: Meridian Black & Ethnic Minority Women's Information & Resource Centre; Black Community Development Project; Black Environment Network; Skillnet Edinburgh and Centre for Human Ecology.

CHE's role within the EMPOWER partnership

Within EMPOWER, the specific contribution of the Community Programme rests in the capacity building of grassroots organisations and individuals. Although we are a white-led organisation, our EMPOWER partners have recognised that CHE has a particular and meaningful contribution to make to the Black-led sector.

Firstly, our expertise with regard to issues of identity and belonging as well as our understanding of the factors contributing to the creation of just and sustainable societies (including individual empowerment and well-being, building community and strengthening voluntary organisations) are valued by our colleagues and partners within EMPOWER.

Secondly, when delivering training and educational programmes, we place great emphasis on participatory approaches, which, in our experience, offer the best avenue to work effectively with and empower grassroots people.

Practically, our work with EMPOWER involves: taking part in the strategic and developmental work of the partnership delivering training programmes with grassroots organisations and developing and delivering a training for facilitators programme.

More information about EMPOWER and its other partners may be found on the EMPOWER website.
