Human Ecology in Action on 25 May
Written by Centre for Human Ecology

There are not many jobs with 'human ecology' in the title - what do human ecologists actually do? Join us to hear the stories of three graduates of the MSc in Human Ecology and find out how they are applying head, heart and hand in their life and work:

  • Claire Carpenter is an eco-social entrepreneur, trading as Creating Connections. Claire's current project is 'The Melting Pot', transforming 2,500+ square feet of space in Edinburgh into a new kind of work and social space to create an incubator for progressive initiatives.
  • Rupert Hawley runs CommonSense Solutions, an organisation working towards affordable eco-homes: experimenting with materials and techniques old and new; training for adults and youth; and promoting the concept that housing development can be beautiful, beneficial to the environment and landscape, and affordable.
  • Maire McCormack is Head of Policy for Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People. The Commissioner is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the rights of children and young people living in Scotland, and ensuring that adults keep the promises made in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Other graduates and students will be presenting posters of their journeys, and Ulrich Loening, former Director of CHE, will have a display of CHE's history.

And who can help human ecologists do what they do? Jim Bennett, Chief Executive of Scotland Unltd will be describing how UnLtd invests both finance and development support in individuals with entrepreneurial solutions to social problems. Both Claire and Rupert have been supported by the UnLtd network.
