CHE Fellow Jamie Whittle will be among the panelists at an
Environmental Law Foundation Question Time to be held at Strathclyde
University in Glasgow later this month.
The event, which is open to the public and free of charge, begins at
6pm on Thursday 20th April. It includes a panel of ELF’s lawyers and
technical consultants who will respond to any environmental issues that
concern people in their local area. The ELF anticipate issues such as
wind farms, nuclear power, roads, air travel, climate change, waste,
phone masts, landscape, countryside, wildlife and how to take legal
action will be high on the agenda. They are hoping for a good turnout
to take advantage of the panel's wide ranging environmental expertise.
In addition to Jamie, the panel is expected to consist of: Nick Atkins,
solicitor (Morton Fraser LLP) (tbc); John Campbell QC, barrister
(Faculty of Advocates); Barry Love, solicitor (Semple Fraser);
Professor Colin Reid (University of Dundee); Alasdair Sampson,
solicitor (Drummond Miller Solicitors); and Professor Mark Poustie
(University of Strathclyde).
ELF are encouraging anyone interested to raise questions in advance, by
e-mailing, phoning or writing to them as this will allow the panel time
to research and prepare as full and comprehensive answers as possible
and also to enable common areas of interest to be identified.
After graduating from CHE in 2002 Jamie qualified as a solicitor and
began working for a law firm based in Inverness and Forres. Recently he
has been particularly focussed on wind farm and electricity
transmission related issues but is involved in other rural matters such
as planning, agricultural and environmental cases. He has also
qualified in mediation, a process which encourages communities and
individuals to settle their disputes without the need to go to court.
Jamie explained that mediation empowers people to make decisions
themselves rather than giving the decision to a judge.
Outside legal circles, Jamie moonlights as a ski instructor and
canoeing guide and has been working with CHE Fellow Dave Key on
wilderness advocacy.
