Exploring Glasgow's vision of environmental and
social justice is a seminar on Thursday 23rd March which looks at progressive initiatives in Glasgow.
It has been organised by CHE/UoS students with
support from the Department of Geography and Sociology and will give members of CHE and university
staff and students the chance to find out more about the network of
progressive organisations in Glasgow while at the same time help
introduce CHE to that network.
The session will be chaired by Glasgow's Green MSP Patrick Harvie and
feature speakers from the Black Environment Network, the GalGael Trust,
the Phoenix Centre and the John Muir Trust.
This forum has been conceived as a part of the process of rooting the
CHE in Glasgow, connecting with what is happening and drawing ideas and
inspiration from work being done in the city's communities. The aim is
also to strengthen and enrich the links between these organisations and
the University, where the Department of Geography and Sociology works
extensively with local communities as well as nationally and
internationally.
The idea for the forum arose from a conversation between the CHE's
Glasgow-based students, Verene Nicolas the Course Co-ordinator and Will
Dinan, who organises the Departmental Seminar series. The
students have been involved in liaising with speakers, designing
publicity and organising venues and catering for the event. MSc student
Henning Drager, who is co-ordinating the evening, stresses: "It'll be
totally plum - don't miss it!"
The seminar, on Thursday 23rd March, begins at 5.30pm in the common
room on the 8th floor of Strathclyde University's Graham Hills
building. Entrance to the building is from 50 George Street and the way
to the common room will be signposted. After the proceedings there will
be food and a social gathering at the Phoenix Centre which is nearby.

Another date for the diary is the CHE Gathering on Thursday 25th May.
This will incorporate the graduation of last year’s MSc students and
CHE’s annual general meeting. The programme has yet to be finalised –
but the event is planned for the afternoon and will be held at the
Quaker Meeting House in Edinburgh. More details soon.
